Perry is a Chicago native born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was on television as Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. Her parents, however, didn't want her to pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry claimed she felt timid to perform in high school but began acting in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry started her acting career with New York after graduation, getting small roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was staged at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry starred in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal that starred her father. That same year the actress was selected to play a young model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young version of her mother's character. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
